40 years of friendship

Created by Peter and Pamela 3 years ago
We have known Jane almost 40 years since Peter’s appointment as Head of Hinchingbrooke School in Huntingdon. Our paths crossed at many local events, when Jane was Mayoress of Godmanchester, a role she performed graciously and effectively, and also through numerous school events. Jane was later to become a member of the school secretarial staff. She was one of the first people we had met who knew her way round a computer and projected an air of calm efficiency.  Beyond the “official” contact, Jane soon became a dear friend. The first thing we remember about her was her readiness to see where help was needed and to offer it unreservedly.

We were sad to see Martin and Jane move to Cornwall , but it soon became clear that Huntingdon’s loss was Mevagissey’s gain as Jane rapidly and generously gave her time and energy and secretarial skills to the local community. We accepted Jane’s kind invitation to Cornwall soon after their move and this was the first of several visits over the years, always a highlight of our summer. Jane and Martin were generous with their hospitality, and for Jane nothing was too much trouble. We enjoyed coastal walks with the dogs, visits to beautiful gardens, made more interesting by Martin and Jane’s enthusiasm for and knowledge of plants. At the end of a day Jane’s excellent meals were always a treat.

We shall miss Jane greatly, but will remember her always with gratitude and affection.
